The Siege of Acre Richard I arrived at Acre on the 8th of June 1191. His great energy inspired the troops, who had been besieging the city for almost two years. On the 11th of July there was one final battle and on the 12th the city offered their terms of surrender to the Crusaders. It was here that Richard I got the name Richard the Lionheart. While no one doubted Richard's skill in battle his temper often marred his leadership. Three banners were placed over Acre to represent their victory but Richard tore down the German banner. King Philip II, returned to France and Leopold of Austria left as well. Richard I, became the overall commander of the Third Crusade, together with Hugh of Burgundy, who would lead the French. |
