William Harley who held lands in Herefordshire, went to Jerusalem with Godfrey de Bouillon: v. Harleian M.S. in the British Museum, 1545. Plut. 57, c. The present Earl of Oxford trances his descent direct from this Crusader. Sir William de Harley, is first mentioned in the viſitation of Shropshire 1623 CE, in the college of arms, as Lord of Harley in that county. |
William Harley He was one of the knights who joined Godfrey de Bouillon, Robert Curthose the Duke of Normandy, and others in the first Crusade. Sir William belonged to the order of, the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. He married Catherine Daughter of Sir jasper Crofts who was also a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. William de Harley died in England and is buried at the Abbey of Pershore. |
