Roger de Barnevilla, styled by Raimoud d' Agiles "Miles clarissimus et karissimus omnibus," was killed by an arrow, near Antioch. This family came from Brittany to England temp. William the Conqueror, and a branch of it went to Ireland with Henry the second. The present descendants of Roger de Barnevilla are Baron Trimlestown, the noble house of Kingsland, and Sir Reginald de Barneval.


Roger settled in 1085 in Sicily where he obtained important possessions from Roger de Sicily. He joined Robert II, Duke of Normandy, in the first Crusade, together with his brother Guillaume/Hugh.

On 4 June 1098 CE, during the battle of Antioch. He goes out with a small group to watch the movements of the Turks, who attacked them. In his flight, his horse falls in the marshes of the river. Despite his bravery, he dies with his sword in his hand. his enemies pierce him with their long spears. The Crusaders recover the body and give him a burial in the cathedral of Antioch.

In 1078 CE William the Conqueror, pursued the rebelling Saxons to the Roman wall (Hadrian's Wall). He returned to York in triumph. There he gave Roger de Barneville, the manor of Newton (Cleveland), and various other lands which his descendants possessed until the 14th century.
