King of Jerusalem? Frederick II entered Jerusalem on the 17th of March 1229 CE and attended a crown wearing ceremony the following day. It is unknown whether he intended this to be interpreted as his official coronation as King of Jerusalem. The absence of the patriarch, Gerald, makes the whole ceremony questionable. There is evidence to suggest that the crown Frederick II wore was actually the imperial one. Proclaiming his lordship over Jerusalem was a provocative act. Legally Frederick II was only regent for his son Conrad II of Jerusalem, who was born shortly before Frederick II went on crusade in 1228. Conrad was the only child he had with Isabella II of Jerusalem, and the grandson of Maria of Montferrat and John of Brienne. |
