The Crusade Fails Much to the dismay of John of Brienne, Pelagius rejected the offer, demanding more land. While negotiations dragged on, and eventually failed, the Egyptians moved to cut off the Crusaders' supply line to Damietta. Meanwhile, an attempt by the Crusaders to cross the Ashmoun canal failed. Having thrown away the chance to gain Jerusalem, the Crusaders were now forced to accept Egyptian terms, surrendering Damietta. In return they received a few relics, of little value to the Muslim Egyptians, and safe passage back home.
