One of the founders of the Knights Templar, together with Godfrey de St. Audomare. He became the first Grand Master of the Knights Templar from 1119-1136 CE. He was succeded by Robert de Craon, the second Grand Master of the Knights Templar. From June 1136 CE, until his death on the 13th of January 1147 CE.

 The 16th century historian, Marco Antonio Guarini, 1570-1638 CE, wrote in 1621 CE that Hugh the Payens was buried at the Church of San Giacomo in Ferrara, Italy. Page 224, of the book, "Compendio Historico" translates:

in this Church are buried some persons of historical importance, in particular "Ugo Pigani", who, according Guglielmo Arciue di Tiro, founded the order of Knights Templar.

Guglielmo Arciue di Tiro, or in English, William of Tire, circa 1130-1186 CE was the archbishop of the city of Tire, modern day Lebanon.
